Dancing with Myself by Billy Idol

I read Dancing with Myself earlier this year, but it's taken me a long time to review it. I think that's because I found it to be such an exciting read and one that I saw reflections of in the next book I read.

This biography was written by Billy Idol himself... no ghostwriter. In this autobiography, he recounts his memories of his earlier life in a very open way, even when they weren't the most flattering. Idol seems to be a man who is at peace with the road he's taken in life, and secure in the knowledge that it's his past that has taken him to where he is today.

I especially enjoyed the self-reflective way that Idol wrapped up his book... an ending that included the death of his father and his current life with his two adult children.

Reading Billy Idol's autobiography is also an interesting glimpse into both the making of the punk scene and the making of a music legend, including all the hard-won battles and missteps it took Billy to get there. I would suggest this book to anyone who is a fan of Billy Idol and punk music, or anyone who would just like a voyeuristic glimpse into the life of someone who shaped popular music and gave it a much-needed edge.
