The Swans of Fifth Avenue by Melanie Benjamin

Updated: Jun 19, 2018

A wonderful book that really transports its readers back in time. A true treat for any Truman Capote fan. You can hear his voice as your eyes trail down the page. A must-read for anyone who's interested in the aristocracy of yesteryear and the hard won luxury reveled in, yet sometimes only endured by those perceived as beautiful and fortunate.

My only regret is that the story didn't form a true circle. It began with the emotional 'swans' meeting to discuss the wrongs done to them, but that scene was never fully resolved.

The long 'author's note' at the end kept me from realizing how close I was to finishing the book, so I took a break. I think not knowing I was so close to the end took something away from the experience, but maybe it's only fitting. After all, the characters didn't realize how soon it would all end for them either.

The Swans of Fifth Avenue is published by Delacorte Press.
